Ἀκράγας

The Doric temples that still tower over the ancient site of Agrigento show how powerful and proud the city became after Greek colonists founded it in the 6th century BC; it grew into one of the foremost cities of the Mediterranean. Much of the old town has never been excavated and is still buried, undisturbed, beneath fields and orchards. The parts that have been dug reveal the Hellenistic and Roman town that came later and how its early Christians buried their dead.
