Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus

Ἐπίδαυρος

By the 6th century BC at the latest, the city-state of Epidaurus had adopted the worship of Asklepios, god of medicine, as its official cult. That worship had grown up in this small Peloponnesian valley out of a far older cult of Apollo Maleatas. The Theatre, often ranked among the most perfect works of Greek architecture, went up in the 4th century BC together with the Tholos and the Temple of Asklepios. Temples and hospital buildings for the healing gods spread across the large site, showing how Greeks and Romans sought cures.
