Archaeological Site of Olympia

Ὀλυμπία

From 776 BC the Olympic Games were held every four years at Olympia, and the remains of every building put up for them still stand beside the temples. The valley in the Peloponnese had been lived in since prehistory and had become a centre of Zeus worship by the 10th century BC. Its sacred precinct, the Altis, gathers more masterpieces of Greek art than almost anywhere else.
