Ostia Antica
Ostia
Ostia was founded at the mouth of the Tiber. Its oldest remains are a fort of tufa blocks built by Roman colonists in the second half of the 4th century BC to guard the river mouth. After the 2nd century BC the town began to lose its military role, and it soon became Rome’s main commercial hub.
