ḤARRĀN
Harran, 44 km south of Şanlıurfa, served as capital of both the Neo-Assyrian kingdom and the Umayyad state, and its temple of the moon god Sin made it a holy city for centuries. An oval wall some 4 km long, set with 187 square towers, takes in the Fortress-Palace, the Harran Mound and the Great Mosque, counted as Anatolia’s first great mosque. The town is also known for beehive houses of mudbrick with conical domes, a type the region has built since the Neolithic.
