Ancient City of Miletus

Μίλητος

Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes, the thinkers of the Milesian school, are linked with Miletus. Once the Persians had invaded in 494 BC, the Archaic acropolis was left empty, and in Hellenistic times the town centred on the Lion Harbour and the theatre. Roman builders added the Faustina Baths, the theatre, the Harbour Gate and the stadium, but in time silt from the Great Maeander filled the harbour and the city lost its standing.
